Referrals: What Patients Need to Know

What is a referral?

What is a referral?

A referral is when your provider sends you to another doctor or service for care.
This helps you get the care that is best for you.

We may refer you to:

  • A specialist doctor
  • A therapist or counselor
  • A lab or imaging center
  • Another clinic or hospital

Why do I need a referral?

You may need a referral if:

  • You need special care we do not offer here
  • You need more tests
  • Your condition needs expert treatment

Your provider will talk with you before sending a referral.

How does the referral process work?

  1. You see your provider.
  2. Our referral coordinator sends the referral.
  3. The other office reviews it.
  4. They contact you to set up a visit.

This can take time.

How long will it take?

Wait times are different for each service.
Some visits take weeks or months.

Urgent referrals are seen sooner.
We do not control another office’s schedule.

Will someone call me?

Yes. The other office usually calls or sends a letter or text.

Please make sure we have:

    • Your correct phone number
    • Your correct address

Do I need to do anything?

  • Answer calls from unknown numbers – this may be their attempt to contact you
  • Open your mail
  • Go to your appointment

If you cannot go, call the specialist right away.

What if I feel worse?

If your symptoms get worse:

  • Call us to make an appointment, or
  • Go to urgent care or the emergency room if needed

Do not wait if you feel very sick.

Checking on your referral with our referrals coordinator

You can reach our referrals coordinator on 479-316-4291

We can tell you when your referral was sent and whom it was sent to.

We can provide the contact details for that provider.
For appointment dates, you may need to call the specialist.

We are here to help.
